How to save a copy of Wikileaks website using HTTrack (a guide for non-geeks).

11 Dec 2010 Update! A week is a long time in politics. Last weekend it took effort to locate wikileaks but this weekend there are over a thousand mirrors. Democracy is fighting back.

4 Dec 2010: Wikileaks is under attack. This page explains how to save wikileaks' website including currently available leaked documents onto your own computer.

First, find wikileaks because http://wikileaks.org might be offline indefinitely. You can check for mirrors (copies of the website) on wikileaks’ twitter account http://twitter.com/wikileaks  or at http://wikileaks.info  or in the external links at the bottom of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WikiLeaks.

HTTrack is free software that enables you to save entire copies of websites with all links intact. You can download HTTrack from http://www.httrack.com. I've used the software without problems but before installing it you should scan the download with your virus and spyware software, just in case. Right-clicking the downloaded file might provide these options.

Once HTTrack is installed ignore boxes asking about proxy settings (...at least, that worked for me). Close the program and reopen it. You should get a screen like this. Click “Next”.

Then, on the screen below, name your project (Wikileaks seems suitable) and click “Next”.

On the next screen, click “Add URL...”

Then add a currently working address for wikileaks into the Insert URL dialog box and click “OK”.

Click “Next” which will bring up the following screen.

Now select “Finish” and the download will start. You did it!
